Theater Gone Wrong: Beth Leavel Loses a Battle With a Door in 42nd Street

Even the simplest stage tasks can go awry when you're trying to look elegant.

Through September 17, you can find Tony winner Beth Leavel at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre playing the homespun Mrs. June Adams in Broadway's Bandstand — mother to war widow Julia (played by Laura Osnes). However, about a decade ago, she put on her show-biz glitz as Dorothy Brock in the revival of 42nd Street. Every night, she'd don a killer costume and make a dramatic entrance at the top of a spiral staircase. Sounds simple, but at one performance, that glamorous moment took an ungraceful turn that had the whole cast in stitches.
